Piece Story

Lotus Charm

Layered lotus petals over snow.
A companion piece to "Lotus Rhyme" with a distinct silhouette: the center of the lid is sculpted with layered lotus petals, resembling a blooming flower facing the viewer; the teapot body is slightly flattened with a ring handle and short spout, accented by a single red petal on the left. Both "Lotus Rhyme" pieces are crafted from snowflake duanni—a symbiotic ore of purple and green clays, characterized by rich, granular texture and a stable body, with black speckles resembling snowflakes that deepen into a golden hue after seasoning. Chen Honghua’s "Pine, Bamboo, and Plum Teapot" is housed in the China Yixing Zisha Museum, and the lotus is a recurring theme in his work—same clay and theme, yet one features a flower and the other a bud, with one body round and the other flat, making them a perfect pair for any collection.
Brewing suggestions: Fragrant oolong, raw pu-erh, and white tea.
Ideal for: Collectors of "lotus" motifs and those who appreciate the warm, golden tones of duanni.

Maker Profile

Chen Honghua

Female, born on April 15, 1972, in the "Pottery Capital" of Yixing into a family renowned for Zisha pottery. She is a Senior Arts and Crafts Master and a Senior Rural Revitalization Technician, as well as a member of the Jiangsu Ceramic Art Committee. She is a graduate of the Advanced Seminar on Humanities and Ceramic Art at Tsinghua University and holds a degree in Arts and Crafts from Nanjing Normal University. Passionate about Zisha since childhood, she began her apprenticeship at a Zisha factory in 1991 under the tutelage of Gao Jianfang, a Jiangsu Provincial Master of Arts and Crafts and the primary successor of representational Zisha art. In 1999, she co-founded the "Pangzi Pottery" studio with her husband, Chen Zhiming, and was named a Senior Arts and Crafts Master in 2022. Her creative approach focuses on solid foundational skills, emphasizing the overall form and spirit of her work, with a commitment to meticulous craftsmanship. Her artistic philosophy posits that Zisha creation should extend beyond mere technique and art to incorporate philosophical reflection, with aesthetics following closely behind philosophical thought. Representative honors include: a Gold Award for "Han Pot" at the 7th China Ceramic Masters and Masterpieces Exhibition in 2019; a Silver Award for "Melon Fun Tea Set" at the 4th Jiangsu Art Expo Cup for Ceramic Innovation in 2015; and an Excellence Award in the Intermediate Group of the "Jiang Rong Cup" All-Handmade Floral Vessel Competition in 2019.
