Piece Story

Rippling Lotus

Begonia Waking from Slumber.
The pot body is plump and rounded like a begonia in gentle repose; two shallow lines grace the lid, reminiscent of a breeze crossing a lotus pond, stirring the first ripples. The bridge-shaped knob, ring handle, and short spout feature soft yet uninterrupted lines. "Begonia Red" clay is a distinctive variety of red clay; high in iron content with a fine, glutinous texture, it fires to a color resembling the morning glow—warm, mellow, and vibrant, exceptional at coaxing out the tea’s fragrance. Chen Honghua is renowned for his mastery of ribbed and floral-style teapots; here, he turns to a rounded form—it is the hallmark of a master to express such profound simplicity in a minimalist piece.
Best for: Black tea, Yan tea, and ripe Puer.
For whom: Those who appreciate warm tones and a substantial, comfortable feel in the hand.

Maker Profile

Chen Honghua

Female, born on April 15, 1972, in the "Pottery Capital" of Yixing into a family of Zisha artists. She is a Senior Arts and Crafts Master and a Senior Rural Revitalization Technician, as well as a member of the Jiangsu Ceramics Art Committee. She graduated from the Advanced Seminar on Humanities and Ceramic Art at Tsinghua University and holds a degree in Arts and Crafts from Nanjing Normal University. Passionate about Zisha since childhood, she began her apprenticeship in 1991 at a Zisha factory under the tutelage of Jiangsu Arts and Crafts Master Gao Jianfang (the foremost successor of figurative Zisha art). In 1999, she co-founded the "Pangzi Pottery" studio with her husband, Chen Zhiming, and was conferred the title of Senior Arts and Crafts Master in 2022. Her work is rooted in solid foundational techniques, emphasizing the overall form and spirit, with a focus on meticulous craftsmanship. Her artistic philosophy holds that Zisha creation should not be limited to technical and artistic dimensions but must incorporate philosophical reflection, with aesthetics following in the footsteps of philosophical thought. Representative honors: Her work "Han Hu" won the gold medal at the 7th China Ceramic Masters and Masterpieces Exhibition in 2019; "Gua Qu Tea Set" received the silver medal at the 4th Jiangsu Ceramic Art Innovation Exhibition in 2015; and she was awarded the Excellence Award in the Intermediate Group of the 2019 "Jiang Rong Cup" All-Handmade Floral-Style Pottery Competition.
