Piece Story

Plum Blossom Zhou Pan

Gold floating in an ink sea. The pot body is crafted in the "Zhou Pan" style, flat and round like a dish reflecting water, with shallow vertical ribs segmenting the surface—the lines subtle and understated. Delicate pale yellow plum blossoms adorn the lid, resembling golden grains floating in a sea of ink, a perfect harmony of strength and softness. The "Black Star" clay is sourced from the deepest layer of the Huanglong Mountain "Di Cao Qing" deposit. Containing tiny, ink-colored inclusions, it is exceptionally rare and difficult to extract, boasting a pure and refined texture; when fired, it yields a brownish-yellow hue with a lustrous black sheen and distinct porosity. Chen Honghua is renowned for the geometric precision of his ribbed wares; in this pot, the juxtaposition of shallow ribs with gentle plum blossoms demonstrates a masterful sense of proportion.

Best for: Pu-erh, Rock Oolong, and heavy-roast Oolong teas.
Ideal for: Those who cherish the ancient aesthetic of the Zhou Pan, yet harbor a heart for a touch of tenderness.

Maker Profile

Chen Honghua

Female, born on April 15, 1972, in Yixing, the "Pottery Capital," into a family of Zisha artists. She is a Senior Arts and Crafts Master and a Senior Rural Revitalization Technician, as well as a member of the Jiangsu Ceramics Art Committee. She graduated from the Advanced Seminar on Humanities and Ceramic Art at Tsinghua University and majored in Arts and Crafts at Nanjing Normal University. Passionate about Zisha since childhood, she began her apprenticeship at a Zisha factory in 1991 under the tutelage of Jiangsu Arts and Crafts Master Gao Jianfang (the primary successor of figurative Zisha art). In 1999, she and her husband, Chen Zhiming, co-founded the "Pangzi Pottery" studio. She was conferred the title of Senior Arts and Crafts Master in 2022. Her creations are characterized by solid foundational techniques, a focus on the overall shape and spirit of the work, and refined craftsmanship. Her artistic philosophy is that Zisha creation should not be limited to technical and artistic levels, but should also incorporate philosophical reflection, with aesthetics closely following philosophical thought. Representative honors include: a Gold Award for "Han Pot" at the 7th China Ceramic Masters and Masterpieces Exhibition in 2019; a Silver Award for "Melon Fun Tea Set" at the 4th Jiangsu Art Expo Cup for Ceramic Innovation in 2015; and an Excellence Award in the Intermediate Group at the 2019 "Jiang Rong Cup" All-Handmade Floral Ware Competition.
