Piece Story

Peace Pot

May prosperity and peace be with you.

The pot body is as flat and round as a pearl held in the palm; the knob features interlocking rings, capturing the essence of "interlinked auspiciousness." The surface is devoid of ornamentation, relying solely on the naturally mottled fire marks of the wood firing. On the rice-white body, ink-like specks are scattered, resembling stars strewn across the night sky. For this Ding-ware style wood-fired piece, white clay is placed in a dragon kiln and fired at temperatures exceeding 1,100 degrees Celsius, allowing the melting wood ash to form a natural glaze. The fire marks and ink spots are spontaneous sketches by the kiln’s flame, with a yield rate of only thirty to forty percent, rendering each piece a unique work of art. While Chen Kangfei is known for his multi-colored clay work, his wood-fired white clay series best showcases his boldness—the unadorned surface perfectly highlights the authentic texture of the clay and the character of the fire marks.

Best for: White tea, green tea, and lightly oxidized oolong tea.
Perfect for: Those who appreciate minimalist wares and value the unique, one-of-a-kind quality of wood-fired pottery.
