Piece Story

Four Seasons of Prosperity

May all seasons bring you fulfillment.

The teapot features a round exterior with a square interior; the rim mimics the square shape of a well, while each of the four sides is adorned with an arched ruyi cloud motif, symbolizing "fulfillment throughout the four seasons" and "uprightness and peace." It is topped with a low, bead-shaped knob and features a looped handle and a short spout. The cinnabar-red base color makes the cloud patterns appear all the more vibrant. The base-trough clear clay (di cao qing) is sourced from the bottom layer of the No. 4 mine at Huanglong Mountain. It contains greenish "chicken eye" specks and is characterized by its exceptional purity and fine texture. When fired, it reveals a cinnabar-red hue that becomes warm and lustrous with long-term use. Zhou Chao hails from a family of teapot makers; his father, Zhou Zhiliang, is renowned as a "master of square teapots." Their ancestral mastery of both square and round forms is perfectly captured in the four ruyi motifs on this round-exterior, square-interior vessel.

Best for brewing: Pu-erh, Oolong, and Black tea.
Ideal for: Those who value symbolic meaning and appreciate the harmony of square and round aesthetics.

Maker Profile

Zhou Chao

Male, born in 1987 in Yixing, the "Pottery Capital," into a family of teapot makers. He is the son of Zhou Zhiliang, a prominent figure in contemporary square teapot design, and learned the craft of teapot making under his father's tutelage. He is a National Assistant Master of Arts and Crafts and an outstanding young ceramic artist. Later, he pursued studies in modeling design at the Fine Arts Department of Jiangnan University, where he combined a solid theoretical foundation with his family’s inherited techniques. His works primarily focus on square vessels, characterized by fluid lines and a style that is antique, dignified, and elegant, balancing both aesthetic appeal and practicality. His craftsmanship is neat and meticulous, resulting in pieces that are substantial, refined, and grand in spirit. He describes his artistic philosophy as "upright without being rigid, merging square and round with harmony," which also reflects his personal character. Representative works include "Green Lion," "Taiji Ruyi," and "Jade Water Chestnut." From 2018 to 2020, he served as the Creative Director of Bainian Danhong Zisha, and in 2021, he became a student of Wang Xiaoli.
