Piece Story

Yuzhu

Longevity of the Pine and Crane.
The teapot body is shaped like a bamboo hat with a tall base, reminiscent of an old hermit wearing a hat by a stream. The panoramic mud-painted scene features a pair of cranes preening their feathers amidst slanted pine branches, with white cranes, black branches, and gold dust reflecting each other to create an ethereal, celestial atmosphere. The fish-roe cinnabar clay is as fine as roe, revealing a golden hue within the red, marking it as a premium vermilion clay. Due to its high iron content and significant shrinkage rate, only six or seven out of every ten pieces survive the firing process, putting the craftsman’s skill to the ultimate test. Gu Yanmei, a master of clay preparation, states, "Only excellent clay can best bring out the color, aroma, and flavor of the tea." Her deep understanding of the material gives her the confidence to use this delicate, precious vermilion clay for such intricate, full-surface mud painting.
Best for: Highly aromatic Oolong, Dancong, and black teas.
Recommended for: Those who appreciate auspicious themes and value master-grade clay.
