Piece Story

Shipiao

Clear breeze over the rock. The Shipiao pot is crafted with a triangular silhouette and a flat bridge lid, exuding a dignified air. The body features a continuous engraving of bamboo, with branches and leaves swaying as if one could hear the wind rustling through them. The Di Cao Qing clay is sourced from the bottom layer of the No. 4 mine in Huanglong Mountain; it is characterized by greenish "chicken-eye" spots, exceptional purity, and a delicate texture. Once fired, it takes on a liver-brown hue, developing a vintage, mellow luster with prolonged use—truly the finest of purple clays. Chen Kangfei, a student of the senior master Lu Hao, is not limited to a single style; this pot makes use of a calm, steady purple clay, where the engraving utilizes the varying depths of the clay’s color to create depth, perfectly balancing vibrancy with tranquility.
Recommended tea: Raw Pu'er, Tieguanyin, Oolong.
Recommended for: Enthusiasts of engraving and those who appreciate the classic character of aged clay.

Maker Profile

Chen Kangfei

Male, born in Yixing, Jiangsu in 1990. As an Arts and Crafts Master, he has been deeply influenced by the pottery art of his predecessors since childhood and developed a keen interest in purple clay. In 2008, he became an apprentice to Mr. Lu Hao, a Research-level Senior Arts and Crafts Master and a renowned figure in Jiangsu Province. He began designing and crafting purple clay teapots, and has conducted in-depth research and innovation in their decoration. In 2015, he founded the "Miaotaozhai" pottery studio. By utilizing the colors of five-colored clay and infusing his works with personal emotion, he emphasizes pattern variations and combines square and round elements, creating a unique style. His works primarily focus on round and plain-finished pieces. The overall designs are ancient, elegant, robust, and rigorous, with fluid and harmonious lines. The pieces he creates are refined, unpretentious, and profoundly meaningful. Representative works include the "Imperial Concubine Handle Pot," "Lotus Seed Pot," "Bamboo Joint Handle Pot," and "Chuanlu Pot."
